Joomla is an open source Content Management System (CMS).

What does that mean to you?

It means that by using Joomla you can build a modern website with amazing and expandable capabilities with out spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to make it happen.

With $10 a month and a little bit of effort you can build a web presence that a couple of years ago was only available to large corporations with massive budgets.

How It Works (simplified)

Joomla uses a database to store and organize the content for the website and when a visitor comes to the site Joomla pulls the content creating the page when the user asks for it.

And No, you don't need to be a database guru to make this work. The only thing you need to know about databases is how to follow the simple directions from your hosting company to set one up. Joomla does everything else for you.

Why This Is Good

When the internet started all web pages were hard coded static content. That meant the background and text and menus were all typed into the page. This method is quick if you only need to create a handful of pages. The drawback to this method is anytime you need to make changes you have to go in and mess with the code for the site and getting the page to display correctly could be time consuming. A bigger problem would arise when menus needed to be changed. If you decided to add a page to the site every single page on the site would have to be edited to include a link to the new page.

In Joomla the pieces are separate. The content, the menus, the templates are all stored in different areas meaning that you can make a single change and all instances of it change.

Working with the separate pieces does take a bit longer to setup than a static site. The long term time savings on maintenance and the ability to do some really cool stuff more than make up for the couple of extra hours on the initial setup.

The entire look of the site can be changed in seconds by uploading a new template and activating it.

SEO & Making Google Happy

Joomla is very friendly for search engines and with a couple of extra features called plugins the boring things that need to be done to make google happy can be automated to run with out you having to do anything.

Plugins For Fun Stuff

Plugins don't just make your life easier. They also are uesd to expand the functionality of your site beyond the core features of Joomla. There are thousands of plugins available for use doing everything from being able to make your own personal YouTube, to building an online store, to creating a paid membership site, just to name a few.

How Long Will It Take To Setup?

Depending on what you are trying to do a basic site can be go from install to completion in several hours. The more complicated the longer it will take.  An extremely complex one can be done in a week or two.

Video Tutorials

The video tutorials on this site go through a basic instillation of the Joomla core and then how to expand the and customize through the use of plugins, modules and templates. The core instillation videos are broken up into small chunks to make easily digestible and will take about an hour to go through from start to finish. The videos for specific plugins and modules are added to frequently. These videos are designed to be short and user friendly but will vary depending on the level of difficulty of making it work.
